Bishop Burton College in the East Riding of Yorkshire has reported that a strain of avian flu has been detected in a small number of its captive birds.
A confirmed outbreak of Avian Influenza has occurred and a 3km captive bird (monitoring) controlled zone has been put in place. All bird keepers should remain vigilant and follow stringent biosecurity measures to prevent future outbreaks.
The risk to public health from the virus is very low, however it is important that people don’t pick up sick or dead birds.
Contact your local Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) office immediately on 0300 303 8268 if you suspect avian influenza. APHA vets will investigate suspected cases.
