08The Agriculture Bill, the most important piece of legislation to come before Parliament for UK farming, particularly in England, for many decades and it is now scheduled to have its ‘Report Stage’ in the House of Commons next Wednesday (May 13).
This is the final stage in the Commons and, therefore, the last opportunity for MPs to discuss and amend the Bill before it passes over to the House of Lords for consideration.
Ahead of that debate, which will be a virtual one due to remote working in Parliament at present, the NFU has put together a briefing setting out our views on how the Bill can pave the way for a more productive and sustainable farming model fit for the 21st century.
The NFU has also launched a new ‘Write to your MP’ tool for members to encourage their MPs to take part in this important stage of the debate.
Earlier this year, it ran a similar tool from which over 600 members contacted over 200 MPs on the Agriculture Bill.
The NFU said: “We are urging members to use this opportunity to contact their MPs again (or indeed for the first time) because of course, since the Bill was last in the Commons the country has been gripped by coronavirus.
“The crisis has demonstrated the importance of having a strong and resilient food supply chain and domestic source of food. It is therefore more important than ever that we galvanize the support of MPs to ensure that we have a strong agricultural sector for generations.”
